Fashion is a science!

As a nurse, I view everything as a “science”. Everything has a formula -- including fashion! Tara and I follow tons of other bloggers and usually end up feeling a tad defeated. I have fallen in love with tons of items, which I usually find myself purchasing online... and then end up returning them. I think to myself, "That is NOT how I thought that would look on me!". Ninety percent of the time, I return shirts because I am a tall girl and my monkey arms and long torso do not comply with the average shirt pattern. I return jeans because I have no butt and what I think I may like does this booty NO justice. Everybody’s “fashion science” is different. The brands that work for me are not always the brands that work for Tara. We have two COMPLETELY different body types… and we know it! Fashion blogs are an awesome source of inspiration, but they cannot always be used to replace items in your closet.  How can you battle this? Here are some great tips to find YOUR fashion formula!
  1. Embrace your body type! Whether you are short and round, tall and lean, pear shaped, muscular… whatever, you cannot change what God gave you. Quit looking at the supermodel in the magazine and look in the mirror. THAT is what you are working with. Everybody has flaws… but its time to begin looking at how you can embrace the parts that you love!
  2. Find the brands that look the best on you. I have crazy long legs and I love wearing heels. And for all of you tall chicks out there, you know that's not always easy to accomplish. I know that if I want to wear high heels, I need to pull out my Paige’s, Joe’s or Express jeans. I try to branch out, but I usually don’t waste my time. I aim for brands that have a reputation for an obnoxiously long inseam... and I head straight to that section of the department store. I don’t have time to spend hours in a dressing room, and you probably don’t either!
  3. Find a store that is forgiving with their return policy. I have a big problem with a clothing commitment. Is it going to look right after I pair it with MY stuff? Is it still going to look as amazing at home as it did in the ‘oh-so-forgiving’ dressing room mirror? I can’t say enough about stores like Nordstrom and Sephora. I can order a hundred items on there, and if I need to return them for any reason, I can. No questions asked. There is no time limit for returns (which works wonders for my busy schedule) and they offer a wide variety of everything!
  4. Don’t be afraid to branch out. I am the worst about thinking that how it looks on the hanger is how it will look on me! So I pass up a lot of great opportunities. The truth is, you will never really know unless you try it. You might be surprised!
  5. Wear what you have in your closet in different ways. What does THAT mean? Do you always wear that one pair of shoes with a certain pair of jeans? Mix and match what is currently hanging in your closet. It's great way to save money and still find a new look. I’ll be honest, when it comes to fashion, sometimes I hit, and sometimes I miss... but at least I tried. So get outside of your comfort zone and try something new.
We aim to inspire!... but it’s what works for us and it's what WE love! What brands look best on you?? Comment below... want to know!!

What FUN!
A few weeks ago I received an email. It was simple and to the point and to be honest, I thought it was spam! It said I had been "nominated and have been chosen as one of the 30 finalists for the annual 'Most Beautiful Women in Fort Worth' feature, which will appear in the January 2016 issue of Fort Worth, Texas magazine. " It also said that they wanted me to come in for a short photo and video shoot so they could upload pictures and video on their website for voting (people will vote for the top 10 out of the thirty of us). Then it had a list of times for a photo shoot and told me to choose a time and date and email her back. I was hesitant to write back, again thinking this was a joke, but it wasn't! How exciting and what an incredible experience! I still cannot believe I was chosen.

The photo shoot was yesterday and let me tell you-I was super nervous! I tried my best to not worry too much all week, and I felt confident in my choice of attire...until the night before! That's when I had a mini melt down and just wasn't sure what to wear! I didn't want to walk in pretending to be someone I wasn't. I didn't want to come across as fake or phony and I wanted to feel comfortable and confident in what I chose to wear.  I woke up Friday morning and had an epiphany. It wasn't about WHAT I was wearing, it was about WHO I am! As long as I was true to myself, and showed the real me, then things would be fine. Fashion is fun and makes you feel sexy, confident and stand out, but you have to OWN who you are on the inside or else you are just hiding behind your clothes.

My principal (I teach third grade) was amazing and let me leave early so I could get ready for the shoot that afternoon. I went home, redid my makeup, touched up my hair and stuck with an outfit that I would wear on a normal date night...dark skinnies, stilettos and a cobalt blue top (on of my favorite colors ever!) and I felt like I could take on the world! And fortunately my partner in crime and my fashion bestie, Sarah, was able to go with me (she helped put my nerves at ease!)

We arrived on time and they didn't waste second! I was put behind the big white flash umbrellas with a solid white floor and back drop and the photographer just told me to do whatever I felt like! That was awkward and fun at the same time! There were people in cubicles right next to where the shoot was so it was a little weird having to pose and try to be camera appealing with them all sitting there! And of course I had to be a bit silly...that's just who I am!

After the shoot, Steve the camera man took me back to make a short video for the website. Sarah and I had gone over lots of random questions they could possibly ask me, and I do videos on Facebook often so I was feeling pretty confident. However, once I sat down and he started asking me questions, my mouth went dry and I could hear my voice quivering! I think I answered honestly and did a pretty good job! Just hope Steve makes sure I don't sound all shaky! Ha!

All in all, it was an incredible time! I tried to find out who nominated me but come to find out,I was one of the few girls who was anonymously nominated. Apparently Amy, the one who was in charge of the whole thing, said she had to hunt me down because they didn't give her much info but did include my name and picture! But thank you to whoever it was! I am honored that someone found me worthy of this! "Pretty is as Pretty does" and I think I showed off my inner beauty for sure!
